Description
100% Irish native Galway Wool, 125g.
Galway Wool is exclusively sourced through the Galway Sheep Breeders Association from purebred Galway sheep. These sheep and their wool is deeply connected to the heritage of traditional Aran sweaters and Irish tweed.
Though the Galway breed can be found across Ireland and parts of the UK, its wool is incredibly rare. With fewer than 2,000 breeding females remaining worldwide, working with Galway wool means embracing a piece of textile history that is both precious and unique.
Classified as ‘long wool’ sheep, the staples from a Galway Fleece are not exceptionally long, they are firm and crisp with an indistinct, fluffy crimp. The staples are long enough for Worsted Spinning, giving good stitch definition and making it an ideal yarn for textured knits such as Aran.
This blend is not superwash. Approx 28-30 micron, this fibre is rustic and hard-wearing with a matte finish.
Hand-dyed in small batches in Cork, Ireland. Please ensure you buy enough to finish your project as future dyelots may vary. Please note, although we take great care in photographing our yarns, colours may vary slightly from monitor to monitor.
Additional Information
Gentle washing will keep your project beautiful for longer. For best results, hand-wash your finished project with a drop of detergent or wool wash. If combining light and dark colours, please swatch as the yarns may bleed. This is especially important if using deep reds. To minimise bleeding, hand-washing in cold water is the safest option.
